PORTALES, NM – The Eastern New Mexico football team picked up its first win of the season with a 42-14 victory over Adams State University on Saturday night.

The Grizzlies struck first to take an early 7-0 lead but the Greyhounds rattled off 21 straight points in the second quarter to gain the 21-7 advantage at the half.

Eastern’s offense continued to dominate in the second half, adding a touchdown in the third quarter and two in the fourth to extend the lead to 42-7. Adams State managed one last touchdown late in the fourth but in the end the Greyhounds came out with the 42-14 win.

Nathan Valencia finished the night 22-27 passing with one interception. He threw for 237 yards and five touchdowns.

Justin Manyweather had 110 yards receiving and three touchdowns.

Tonight’s win was not only the first of the season for the Greyhounds, it was also Tye Hiatt‘s first victory as a head coach.

The Hounds now hold a 12-0 record over the competition when keeping them to 20 points or less, dating back to the 2017 season.

The Greyhounds finish out a three-game homestand next weekend when they host Texas A&M University-Kingsville on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 12 p.m. The contest will also be the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams.
