Murrieta<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Records are meant to be broken.&nbsp; There\u2019s always someone bigger, stronger and faster that comes along to rewrite history.&nbsp; There are some marks in the New Mexico High School record books that are impressive; 72 straight wins by the Animas High School football team from 1985-1990, the 70 consecutive wins by the La Cueva baseball team from 2002-2005, George Maes\u2019 81 points for Santa Cruz in 1964 (one point better than Nick Pino\u2019s 80 the year prior).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there is one individual mark that jumps off the page when you see that no one else comes close to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Girls Track and Field<\/strong><br><strong>Discus<\/strong><br><strong>162\u20190\u201d Carla Garret, Santa Fe high School 1983<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLike any record, it\u2019s meant to be broken, but like any record holder, you hope it doesn\u2019t get broken,\u201d Garret said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next closest mark in the record books is 136\u201911\u201d by Jessica Ford in 2003.&nbsp; That\u2019s 23 feet BEHIND Garret\u2019s mark! \u201cIf you look at high school throwers now, those numbers are still competitive,\u201d she added.&nbsp; \u201cIt will be difficult for someone from New Mexico to break those.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Garret also holds the state record in the shot put with a throw of 50\u20191\/4\u201d in 1984.&nbsp; Los Alamos standout Chase Ealey is the next closest competitor with a toss of 47\u20193\u201d from 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Garrett was first introduced to track and field by accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was playing basketball, my No. 1 sport, and the track coach at my junior high school walked through the gym and asked me if I\u2019d ever thrown before,\u201d recalled Garrett.\u00a0 \u201cI had no idea what she meant and I said \u2018yeah\u2019. I thought she meant throw a ball. She meant a discus and shot. I wasn\u2019t really interested, but a couple of my friends were going to do track so I decided to go out for track.\u00a0 I started to win and it was like \u2018wow ok, let me keep doing this if I keep winning.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Garrett\u2019s record mark in the discus isn\u2019t even her most memorable moment as a high school track star.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was probably winning the state championship in a medley relay team my junior year in 1983,\u201d she said. \u201cI won seven state titles, but the relay meant the most. I will always talk about that one.\u00a0 They thought nobody of my size could run and proving them wrong was spectacular!\u00a0 I could always run, but to showcase that in the state meet meant a lot.\u00a0 I also ran the 100m race my senior year in high school. I made the finals, but I was last.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last is not something generally associated with Carla Garrett\u2019s stellar career.&nbsp; The only possibility is that this record is the last one to be broken in New Mexico.<\/p>\n<!--CusAds0-->\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NMAAJ.P.
