PORTALES – Eastern New Mexico University Athletics has announced the addition of Esports, to commence this fall at the start of the 2022-23 academic year. The Esports program will offer Greyhound student-athletes a competitive experience in one of the fastest growing industries nationwide.
“This is an excellent opportunity for Greyhound Athletics to support our university, local community, and future students in a robust way,” said ENMU Athletic Director, Dr. Paul Weir. “To attract new students to our campus, offer a novel sport, and welcome a diverse community inside our doors is a win-win for all of us here at ENMU. Esports has tremendous high-school participation and success here in New Mexico, specifically for us here in Portales, so to strengthen our team through this partnership is wonderful,” said Weir.
ENMU now becomes the sixth Lone Star Conference institution to offer Esports and also joins New Mexico Highlands as the only Division II institutions in-state to offer Esports in conjunction with their athletic department.
Esports at the varsity level is currently offered at over 170 institutions with over 5,000 student athletes, according to the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE). The NACE is the leading collegiate esports governing body with more than 170 schools from across all three divisions of the NCAA, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the junior-college landscape.
Eastern is currently in search for a new coach to lead the Esports program.
